10 Cool Kids’ Room Ideas: Beginner-Friendly Edition
I’ve done my share of room makeovers. But honestly, the kids’ rooms are my favorite spaces to reimagine. I’ve built loft beds in both my boys’ and girls’ rooms, and while those are projects I’m really proud of, they’re not what I’m sharing today. Today is all about cool kids’ room ideas that are beginner-friendly (which definitely doesn’t mean basic). From book nooks to basketball walls, these are the ideas your kids are going to be so excited about!

Cool Kids’ Room Ideas #1: Book Nook
If your kids are anything like mine, they love getting lost in a good book. As a result, we’ve accumulated a mini library, so finding a good way to store and display all the books was a must!
I created this wood accent wall in my boys’ room that doubles as a place for some of their books. Paired with a comfy chair, it’s one of their favorite places in the house!

Idea #2: Creative Storage Solutions
Kids go through toy phases so quickly that it can all start to pile up fast. Similar to the books, I needed a good way to store them so I didn’t lose my mind. 😅 Here are some of the solutions I chose!

I used an IKEA pegboard to build a Nerf wall, which helps keep everything organized.

Woven baskets keep costumes easy to access—because a superhero needs to be ready fast!

Our princess castle has a variety of storage solutions, but my favorite might be the acrylic containers for the Barbies!
Cool Kids’ Room Ideas #3: A Place to Personalize
Every kid needs a space that’s theirs to show off what’s important to them! I love magnet boards or linen boards for this because it keeps everything contained to one area. And kids love rearranging and adding to their boards! Plus, it keeps them from taping or pinning things to the walls. 😵💫

Cool Kids’ Room Ideas #4: Accent Wall
I love peel-and-stick wallpaper for a quick, affordable refresh. Here are some examples of how I’ve used it in my kids’ rooms!

This floral wallpaper was a no-brainer for the princess closet!
Idea #5: A Desk Done Differently
A kids’ desk needs to be multipurpose: a vanity, a LEGO station, an art table, whatever the moment calls for. And in smaller spaces, a traditional desk might not fit at all. That’s where a little creativity comes in!
In both the boys’ and girls’ rooms, the desks tuck right under the loft beds, which makes them a really effective use of space. The boys’ is built in, and the girls’ is a separate piece of furniture. The desks get used for homework and beyond, so I think they’re well worth adding to any kids’ room!

Cool Kids’ Room Ideas #6: Basketball Wall
This project is surprisingly easy (we’re talking 3 steps), and your kids are sure to love it! All you really need is a hoop, cork wall tiles, and tools. I break it down in this tutorial!

Idea #7: Somewhere to Sit
One of my favorite space-saving hacks for cozy seating? A hanging chair! My kids love having a spot to sit in their rooms that’s not their beds. And a hanging chair is just one of those unique features that make a room cool!
If you do have a little more space, you could also choose a rocking chair, a bean bag, or a cozy rug and some throw pillows.

The boys love this hanging chair!

Idea #8: Gallery Wall
A customized gallery wall is a low-effort, high-impact project that adds so much personality! You could pair artwork that’s perfectly on theme with a room, like I did with my girls’ princess castle gallery. Or, you could go more eclectic, with a variety of items that still tie back to the room’s vibe, but are a little less matchy. Check out my boys’ room for inspo there!
We also love hanging these picture frames to swap out and display new art projects. Another hack to keep walls from getting beat up by pushpins and tape!

Idea #9: Ultimate Closet Setup
Your kids might not consider effective storage cool, but I (and probably most parents) sure do. 😂 I transformed my kids’ walk-in closets with IKEA Pax cabinets. Not only did it give them a custom, built-in look, but it also made things much more functional. Check out the boys’ space-themed closet and the girls’ princess closet!

Idea #10: Don’t Skip the Details
Details are what separate a boring room from a really cool one, and since that’s exactly what we’re going for, this idea had to make the list. Small touches like special lightswitch plates, unique lighting, and custom drawer pulls make a bigger difference than you’d expect, and they’re usually the easiest (and cheapest) upgrades in the whole room.

I can’t wait to see the room you dream up!
Seeing the excited looks on my kids’ faces when they see something I’ve DIYed is one of my favorite things! It’s worth all the time and effort, though hopefully, these cool kids’ room ideas don’t take too much of either. If you use any of these tips in the rooms you revamp, be sure to tag me on Instagram so I can see!
