Knead to Know: Secrets of a Great Homemade Bread
When I make homemade bread, this is the recipe I choose every time! It is so delicious, and I promise it’s easy! And if you’re afraid of killing the yeast, use a meat thermometer 👍🏻 I get my water to 101•F and it works like a charm every time 🤗 I have also used this recipe for rolls, scones, and pizza crust. You can really use it for any type of dough. It’s is seriously a crowd favorite!
If you do not have a Kitchenaid Mixer, you can use a hand mixer to make your homemade bread. I love my Kitchenaid and use it all the time! It is an investment I am very happy with!

- 2 1/2 Cups Warm Water
- 2 tbsp yeast
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 1/3 cups shortening
- 1 tbsp salt
- 6-7 cups flour
Instructions
- Mix the warm water, yeast and sugar together in a large bowl (a kitchen aid or large mixer is recommended, but not necessary). Let sit for 10 minutes (it will get frothy).
- Add shortening, salt and flour and mix well (add enough flour to where dough is not too sticky, but not thick either). Let sit for 10 more minutes, and then mix again.
- Repeat this step 4 more times each time letting the dough sit for 10 minutes between mixing.
- Recipe makes either 2 large loaves, or 4 smaller loaves. Divide dough into appropriate size depending on size of loaves. Roll dough into a football shape. Place 2 small loaves on a cookie sheet and brush with egg white.
- Make 3-5 small slices across top of each loaf of bread to allow for expanding of bread while baking.
- DO NOT ALLOW DOUGH TO RAISE BEFORE BAKING.
- Bake at 400•F for 20-22 minutes.
- Spread butter over the top of the hot loaf, cut, and serve!
