How to Make a Dorm Feel Like Home

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re either getting ready to move into a dorm yourself or helping someone you love settle into college life. Either way, congrats! What an exciting season. It’s a big transition, filled with anticipation and a lot of packing. While I still have a few years before my kids start heading off to college, I’ve compiled some dorm room essentials (and some honestly genius products—seriously, where were these when I was in school?) to help make a dorm feel like home.

Dorm Room Hack #1: Create Comfort

Let’s be honest: dorm beds are not exactly the highlight of college living. Sometimes you’re lucky, and sometimes, you wonder how that mattress passed a cleaning check. Either way, coming prepared is key. A mattress cover and topper, an upholstered headboard, and a few cozy throw pillows can work wonders. Not only do they make your bed cleaner, but they also help create a little corner of calm.

Rugs are another way to add warmth and coziness to a space, especially if you’re dealing with cold tile or industrial carpet. Even a small area rug can instantly make the room feel more inviting!

Dorm Room Hack #2: Personalize Without Breaking the Rules

Dorms can feel cold and impersonal when you first move in. But there are so many ways to make a dorm room feel more comfortable (while still getting your deposit back during move-out)! Adding peel-and-stick wallpaper, choosing warm lamps over harsh overhead lights, and using Command Strips for gallery walls are some of my favorite renter-friendly decorating tips.

Dorm Room Hack #3: Refresh Furniture That’s Seen Better Days

Like I mentioned in tip #1, the dorm furniture situation can vary from pieces being in great condition to yikes (and everything in between). But never fear—it’s nothing that some disinfecting wipes, Magic Erasers, and contact paper can’t fix.

Here are a few simple and affordable ways to give old furniture new life:

  • Add patterned contact paper or liners to drawers and shelves (You can also add contact paper to a piece of furniture’s exterior, but be sure to be careful if you get a kind with adhesive. When it’s applied to porous or uneven surfaces, it can leave behind the stickiness.)
  • Replace old knobs with new ones (Just be sure to save the original knob and hardware.)
  • Style with plants, trinket trays, and picture frames (Sometimes that’s all it takes to liven up a space!)

Dorm Room Hack #4: Maximize Your Storage

Dorms tend to lack storage space. But with some multi-functional products, you can keep frequently used items within reach, but out of sight.

One of the most underutilized spaces is under the bed. If your bed isn’t already high enough to add extra bins underneath it, use bed risers to give yourself some extra room. Another of my favorite tricks: grab two clear rolling storage drawers and zip-tie them together. Now you’ve got easy access to under-bed storage that slides right out when you need it!

Dorm Hack #5: Bring a Touch of Home

Leaving home is exciting, but it can also be a lot. Adding a few personal, comforting touches can really help with the transition.

Photos of friends and family or your favorite blanket are simple but meaningful touches of home. Scent is also a powerful tool! Whether you bring a fragrance that reminds you of home or choose a new one that marks a fresh chapter, it’s about creating an environment that feels safe and comforting.

Dorm Essentials You Didn’t Know You Needed

Some things don’t make it onto the Pinterest board, but once you move in, you’ll wish you had them. These items can make day-to-day dorm life a lot smoother, so I wanted to include a few more essentials that deserve a spot on your packing list!

Make a Dorm Feel Like Home by Making it Yours

A school year might feel long in August, but it’ll fly by faster than you think. Your dorm should be a space where you can recharge in your home away from home. With a few thoughtful touches, you’ll be surprised how cozy and personal it can become!
