How to Make a DIY Basketball Wall in 3 Steps
One of the last projects I did in my boys’ room makeover was installing a DIY basketball wall. My sports-obsessed boys absolutely love this feature in their room—maybe even more than their double loft bed!
This project only has a few steps, and can easily be completed over a weekend. Follow along as I break down how to create your own indoor basketball wall!

DIY Basketball Wall Supplies:
- Hoop Wall Mount (And here’s another option with the white lines already painted on)
- White Paint and Paintbrushes (If you decide to add lines to the backboard)
- Drill
- Level
- Brad Nailer
- Tape Measure
- Cork Wall Tiles
- Heavy-Duty Scissors
- LED Hoop Light and Mini Zip Ties
- Mini Basketballs (I’m also a big fan of this silent basketball!)
Step #1: Paint Shooting Square & Hang the Backboard
The hoop wall mount I chose didn’t come with a shooting square, so I painted my own! I just measured and taped where I wanted the square to be, then painted around it. However, if yours already has white lines on it, you can skip ahead to hanging the hoop.
Next, I installed the hoop to the backboard with my drill. Then, I used a level, my trusty brad nailer, and the hardware provided with the backboard to install it on the wall.
Step #2: Add the Cork Wall Tiles
Little boys + indoor sports = a recipe for disaster for walls. These cork wall tiles are the perfect solution! I hung them up with nails and a brad nailer, cutting them to size when a full tile wouldn’t fit.
It’s definitely worth it to measure the wall space before installing the tiles. And be sure to account for the fact that you’ll have to cut the pieces to fit around the hoop! A little bit of math will save you frustration down the line (speaking from experience!).
DIY Basketball Wall Step #3: Install the Light-Up Hoop & Net
LED lights give a room such a fun vibe, so I knew I had to add these rim lights to the hoop. I used small zip ties to attach the lights to the rim, then trimmed off the extra parts with scissors. After that, I installed the net that came with the hoop wall mount.
DIY Basketball Wall Reveal
After adding the balls to a basket, this project was officially complete! And now this basketball hoop is one of my boys’ favorite indoor activities.
