Beginner DIY Tools: What You Actually Need to Get Started

People often think they could never DIY, simply because they don’t have all the fancy tools. When you are just starting your DIY journey, you’re unsure whether you will complete enough projects to make the huge investment worthwhile. I get it! I always get asked a few of the same questions about beginner DIY tools. So, let’s get into it!

#1: Which beginner DIY tools brand is the best?

Here is the thing… There are higher-end brands that are actually great. They have all the bells and whistles and are amazing tools. Some are on my wish list to get one day. But truthfully, if you are just beginning and have no idea if you will even pursue DIY long-term, there is no reason to spend hundreds on the high-end tools. I have a lot of RYOBI tools that I purchased early on in my DIYing, and they are great, less pricey options that get the job done! There are definitely great tools for all budgets. Don’t stress about buying the most expensive version just for the name.

#2: Which beginner DIY tools do I really need to get started?

I have five tools that I think are the most important and that I use on almost every project. These are all budget-friendly options that are great for new DIYers.

Are there other tools I would suggest getting? Absolutely, but I would say these five are crucial when starting to DIY.

#3: How do you learn how to use the tools?

The simple answer: practice. No one is proficient in using a tool the first time they pick it up. And that is totally okay! You may mess up a few times when you are first using a tool. There is definitely a learning curve, so embrace it! Take the time to play with the tools, read the manuals, and watch YouTube Videos about them. But most importantly, know that the longer you use a tool, the better you will get at using it.

Bonus: Which tools are worth the extra investment if I do DIY projects frequently?

Like I said above, if you’re a beginner DIY-er, you might not want to take the plunge and get a full toolset just yet. But if you’re DIYing almost daily and doing more intense projects, it’s worth it to invest in some higher-quality tools. Here are the tools I’d recommend spending extra on, and why!

  • Cordless Drill/Driver
    • You’ll be reaching for this tool on nearly every project you do—so if you’re DIYing frequently, you’ll need a reliable drill. Choosing one with a good battery system means more power, less heat, and a longer product lifespan. Dewalt is a well-known brand with great tools.
  • Oscillating Multi-Tool
    • Like the name says, these tools are super versatile. Because they can be used on so many kinds of projects, they’re worth investing in.
  • Circular Saw & Saw Blades
    • A woodworking project is only as good as the saw that cuts the wood. Having both a high-quality saw and blades is important if you want precise cuts and more safety.
  • Safety Goggles
    • Safety is paramount when DIYing, so goggles are important! Choose a comfortable and durable pair that you won’t dread wearing.
