Recently my sister got married and we had a backyard reception at my parents. Three days before the wedding my mom got the idea that she wanted some outdoor tables, and asked me for help. I never turn down a challenge and got to work crafting the perfect, sturdy, beautiful, simple outdoor table. Of course I succeeded, and they turned out so good!
All I used was a measuring tape, seven 2×4’s, six 2×6’s, a miter saw, drill, screws, sand paper and stain. I was able to cut and assemble all of them in one day. I would have been able to finish them in one day if the weather would have cooperated.
I created a thorough guide with all the measurements, a cut list, and step by step instructions on how to create your own table. You can get that HERE. But I wanted to throw in a few tips as well.
Simple Outdoor Table Tip #1: Cut First
I included the cut list in the guide. I encourage you to cut everything before you start. It makes it so much easier and faster.
Tip #2: SCREWS
It will be tempting to use wood glue or nails or something else to secure the table. But I recommend just using some durable outdoor 3 or 2 inch screws. Remember, 2 screws in each joint. You may think 1 is enough. But its not.
Simple Outdoor Table Tip #3: SAND
We are making a table that will be used to sit at and eat. Not to mention we are using raw wood. Be sure to sand it. Get a palm sander if you don’t want to do it by hand. I swear it is worth the extra step!
Tip #4: Pre-Stain and Seal
Anytime I stain something I always recommend a wood conditioner. It evens out the wood so the stain sits on it evenly. It gives the final project a nice, clean, smooth finish. AND like I said before, we are eating on this table. So MAKE SURE you seal it! Get a good clear coat and seal it. You may need to do a couple coats. Again, don’t skip this step!
