How to Choose a Rug You Love: Tips You Haven’t Heard Before

There’s no denying that the right rug can transform the vibe of a space, from cold to cozy, or boring to bold. But beyond the style element, rugs can also be super functional as floor protectors, designated play areas, or just keeping your feet warm when you slide out of bed in the morning! Picking a rug can already be tricky, and buying one online adds a whole other layer of challenges. These tips for how to choose a rug you love will help save you from the guesswork (and hopefully from the hassle of returning a rug, too)!

How to Choose a Rug Tip #1: Match the Rug’s Weight to the Room’s Mood

Sometimes you choose a rug that seems like a perfect match, only to bring it home and realize something feels off. If there’s a style mismatch you can’t quite put your finger on, the rug’s weight might be the culprit. Low or medium-pile rugs tend to feel more elevated, while thick, plush textures often feel casual and relaxed. Contrast can be a great thing in design, but a formal dining room paired with a chunky jute rug is going to feel a little at odds with itself.

Of course, there are exceptions to this tip, but it’s worth considering when choosing a rug!

How to Choose a Rug Tip #2: Size Up

When in doubt, go bigger than you think you need. A rug that’s too small makes furniture look like it’s floating and can actually make the room feel smaller, not cozier. The right size anchors everything. It gives the space a sense of intention and makes the whole room feel more pulled together.

How to Choose a Rug Tip #3: Test the Color Against Your Grout

If you have tile floors, don’t just consider how the rug looks against the tile; think about the grout, too! Grout is usually neutral, but it carries more visual weight than most people expect and can clash with a rug. Hold a swatch (more on that in tip #6) against the floor before committing to the full-size rug.

Here are some options that pair well with each color of grout!

  • Light gray grout: Warm neutrals and earthy tones work best. Avoid rugs that are too cool-toned, or they’ll wash out against it.
  • Dark gray grout: Lighter rugs tend to pair better. Dark or busy rugs can make the whole floor feel heavy.
  • Tan grout: Pretty forgiving as it pairs with rugs! It reads warm on its own, so it plays well with natural fibers, earthy tones, and most warm-neutral rugs.
  • White grout: This is the trickiest of the four because it reads very crisp and clean. Warm-toned rugs feel intentional against it. Cool or very pale rugs can give the space a doctor’s office vibe.

How to Choose a Rug Tip #4: Think About the “Cold Floor Path”

This one is all about the coziness factor! Picture the first few steps you take out of bed in the morning, or across the bathroom floor. You want the rug to actually be where you walk. A rug that misses the path you take every day isn’t really doing its job, no matter how pretty it looks.

How to Choose a Rug Tip #5: Decorate in the Right Order

If you’re starting a room from scratch, try choosing the rug first. It’s one of the largest surfaces in the space and sets the tone for everything that goes on top of it. Picking your pillows and curtains first and then searching for a rug to match is a much harder route, because you’ve already narrowed your options without realizing it. And finding a rug that ties together choices you’ve already made can be tough!

How to Choose a Rug Tip #6: Order a Rug Swatch

Most online rug retailers offer swatches, which is so helpful! Colors look different on every screen, and seeing even a small piece of the rug in your actual space (in your lighting, against your floors) is super helpful.

Rugs are also one of the bigger decor investments you’ll make, so a little extra time at the beginning is worth it. And if you don’t love the swatch, returning a small sample is a lot easier than wrestling a rolled rug back into a box.

How to Choose a Rug Tip #7: Know the Return Policy

Speaking of returns, I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to check out the store’s policy before ordering. Even retailers that do accept returns sometimes charge pricy restocking fees or require you to cover return shipping on a rolled rug, which adds up fast. Read the fine print now and save yourself the headache later.
