10 Easy Halloween Ideas for Kids

There’s something so magical about Halloween as a kid, and I think a big part of it is how easily kids are amazed by the small stuff. As adults, we sometimes overcomplicate it, but the truth is the magic isn’t about going big – it’s about the intentional little things. With that in mind, here are 10 easy Halloween ideas for kids that are low-effort, budget-friendly, and highly memorable!

Easy Halloween Ideas for Kids #1: Countdown Chain

This one is so simple, and kids genuinely love it! Grab some construction paper, kids’ scissors, and tape or a stapler, and help them create a chain counting down to Halloween.

Bonus: When they ask how long until the 31st, you can gently encourage them to find the answer by looking at their chain. An easy craft that helps kids build independence? We love to see it.

Idea #2: Halloween Pajamas

I love shopping for them, and the kids love wearing them. It’s a win-win! Here are a few cute options:

Easy Halloween Ideas for Kids #3: Door Decorating

This project is so cute, and it’s a great, clutter-free way to decorate for Halloween. You could do it on a glass door, like I did, or a window. And you only need three supplies: contact paper, chalk markers, and Halloween-inspired stencils or coloring pages.

Start by making sure the glass is free from little fingerprints, then tape the coloring pages to the back of your door. Next, apply contact paper to the other side. From here, you can either trace the stencils for a more minimalist look, or fully color in the pictures. Once you’re done, remove the pages from the back.

When November rolls around, peel off the contact paper, and voilà, your door is back as it was!

Idea #4: Carve or Paint Pumpkins

It doesn’t get more quintessentially Halloween than decorating pumpkins. And it’s a pretty low-lift activity, so I had to include it on this list! Even better if you’re able to do it outside for easy cleanup. Here are some supplies that make it all easy!

Easy Halloween Ideas for Kids #5: Affordable Indoor Decor

Kids love having a space to call their own – somewhere to display their artwork, school crafts, and favorite little trinkets. Leaning into that for Halloween will mean a lot to them!

Take them to Target or Walmart and let each kid pick out one small decoration for under $5. They’ll be so proud of “their” piece all season long, and as a bonus, it tends to redirect their attention away from the decorations you actually care about in the main living areas. 😂

Easy Halloween Ideas for Kids #6: Simple Outdoor Decor

Can’t forget the outside of the house! One of my favorite easy Halloween touches is a good spider web. This year I paired the webs with these spiders and added them to our garage pergola. It’s spooky without being over the top, and the kids (and I) love it!

If you want to pair it with a fun DIY project, I’d recommend this giant spider, jack-o’-lantern arch, spooky tree, or floating witch hats – all great options for taking the outdoor decor up a notch!

Idea #7: Spooky Movie Night

Vote on a movie, put on the Halloween pajamas, then gather up all the movie night essentials for a cozy night in! If you’re feeling brave, you could even let kids stay up a half hour or so later to up the fun factor. (But be warned: it might not be as fun the next day, depending on how cranky your kiddo gets with a bit less sleep. 😅)

Easy Halloween Ideas for Kids #8: Boo Baskets

My formula for a fun, holiday-themed gift basket for kids: a seasonal book, a couple of treats, fun socks, and little trinkets like bouncy balls, slime, or fidget toys. It doesn’t take much, and it can all be found at the dollar store or Amazon.

Idea #9: Sidewalk Chalk

A few days before Halloween, encourage kids to use chalk on the sidewalk leading up to your house. They’ll love decorating for the trick-or-treaters!

Easy Halloween Ideas for Kids #10: A Festive Breakfast

Kick off Halloween morning with a spooky breakfast. Try jack-o-lantern pancakes (a squeeze bottle makes the shapes so much easier), mummy toast with cream cheese and candy eyes, or donut pumpkins made with orange icing and a pretzel stem. You don’t need to be a chef, just a parent with a little food coloring and a lot of enthusiasm.

Halloween doesn’t have to be elaborate to be special. Pick a few of these ideas that feel right for your family and run with them. The memories will stick around long after the candy is gone!
