How to Reupholster Kitchen Bar Stools (In Just 4 Steps!)
Were my previous kitchen bar stools fine? Technically, yes…if I didn’t mind cleaning out the cracks every single day to remove spilled food and milk (spoiler: I did). Apart from that, they were still functional, so I didn’t want to buy new ones. Instead, I decided to give them a fresh look with new fabric. Here’s how you can reupholster kitchen bar stools and breathe new life into yours, too!

Supplies Needed to Reupholster Kitchen Bar Stools:
- Fabric of Choice (I recommend using upholstery fabric!)
- Staple Gun and Staples
- Fabric Scissors
- Screwdriver or Pliers
- Allen Wrench
- Tape Measure
- Foam Padding
- Electric Scissors
Step #1: Disassemble the Stool
I started by taking the stool apart so I could easily access the cushion. This step will look a little different depending on your stool, but for mine, I removed the wooden plugs that hid the screws and then used an Allen wrench to loosen and remove everything.
Pro tip: Snap a quick photo of the disassembled stool or stick a Post-It on each screw with a note about where it goes. Future you will definitely appreciate this when it’s time to reassemble!
If your stool already has fabric (mine didn’t), you’ll need to remove the old staples using a flathead screwdriver or pliers. Then, check the cushion underneath. If it’s still in good condition, you can simply recover it with new fabric. If it’s worn out, now is the perfect time to replace the foam.
Step #2: Prep the Cushion & Add New Fabric
Once your stool is disassembled, you’re ready to reupholster it! I started by measuring the foam cushion to match the seat and back sizes and cutting them to fit. Then I laid my fabric over the cushion, leaving a few inches around all sides so I’d have enough material to wrap and staple underneath.
Step #3: Staple the New Fabric
Place the seat cushion upside-down on the wrong side of your fabric, making sure it’s centered. Start by stapling one side, then pull the fabric snug and staple the opposite side. Work your way around the cushion, alternating sides so the fabric stays smooth and even. Repeat the process for the seat backs (if your stools have them).
When you get to the corners, fold and pleat them before securing with a few extra staples. Once everything feels tight and secure, trim away any excess fabric.
Step #4: Reattach the Seat to the Stool
Now for the satisfying part! Line up your freshly upholstered seat with the stool base and reinstall the screws (this is where that photo or little notes come in handy!). Make sure everything is tightened and the seat feels sturdy. Give it a quick once-over, and if you notice any visible staples, go ahead and adjust or remove them for a clean finish.
