Boys’ Sports Bedroom: An All-Star Final Reveal

I cannot tell you how many projects I have started that have taken months to finish. Too often, social media makes life seem too unrealistic. It makes you question if you are doing enough or doing it fast enough. But I want to remind you that you are doing an amazing job! Regardless of whether the project is done quickly or over months or even years. Real life takes time! It’s uncertain, messy, and rarely quick or perfect. My boys’ sports-themed bedroom is a great example of this—it took me almost a year to complete the different phases. It was officially finished in March 2025, but then, life happened, and I never got around to posting the reveal on my blog! Side note: Be sure to follow me on Instagram, because I share my projects in real-time there.

Anyway…I started with the closet in June 2024. Then, I built their awesome loft beds that same year in July. After that, the other side of the room sat unfinished for months. It took me a long time, but I finally finished it! The best part of this is that the time it took to finally get around to finishing the room gave me time to evaluate what would be the most practical use of the space. And I think it is perfect!

Basketball Wall

This was a really simple and impactful addition, and my boys were so excited about it! What boy’s room is complete without a basketball hoop? Obviously, I needed to incorporate one into this design, and I am glad I did. THIS is the wall-mounted basketball hoop and ball set that I got. I painted some white lines on it to look more realistic while maintaining the simplistic look.

Using the hardware provided, I installed it on the wall. How fun is it that the rim of the hoop has a light?!

I also got THESE felt cork wall tiles. All I did was nail them to the wall. Because they’re felt, I just used scissors to cut them to size and installed them from floor to ceiling. I added a cute little basket to store the basketballs in and voilà! The boys loved it! Check out their reaction:

Book Nook

Another fun addition to the boys’ room—and a great use of space—was the book nook. I used 1×2 boards that I stained and nailed to the wall. When installing this design, make sure the first board is plumb (perfectly straight vertically), then use a scrap piece of wood to use as a spacer to install the next board, and so on until it is as wide as you want.

Next, I assembled quick little bookshelves. These are SO EASY! Here’s what I did:

  • Take a piece of 1×4 and cut it to the length you want your shelf to be.
  • Then, I cut two pieces of 1×4, four inches long each.
  • Put the two small pieces on the ends of the longer piece, creating a U shape. You can either nail through the small piece into the ends of the longer piece, OR you can do what I did, and use pocket holes.
  • Then, drill a hole on the top and front of each side of the U, and feed through a dowel. Be sure to put glue on the hole so the dowel does not move.
  • On to paint! I chose to paint the dowel black to add some contrast.
  • Finally, I installed the shelves on the wall with screws. I put the screws into the shelves at an angle, then into the wall.

Light-Up Accent Walls

If you cannot tell by now, I love adding LED lights whenever and wherever possible! Something about lights just makes the space more fun and cozy. I initially wanted to add lights to the sides of the wood slats, but that was not working like I wanted it to. So instead, we went with a simple solution. I used the same process as I did on the book nook above to add a board design to the walls. Once that was all complete, I installed these LED letters to spell out my kids’ names.

Desk Update

During the original loft bed build, I built a desk underneath the bed. I had a feeling it would be a catch-all for a bunch of random junk, and sure enough, that is what it became. So I decided to create more functionality by adding some shelves under the desk. I just used some plywood that I cut to size, nailed together, and attached to the desk. It turned out so cute and is now the perfect place to store their papers, books, and little knick-knacks.

Shelves & Cork Boards

Like I said, I am looking for functionality here, and what goes hand in hand with functionality? Storage. So I added more shelves to the wall space under the beds, near the desk, using some scraps that I had. I stained it, then used screws and screwed it all right to the wall. Then, I just nailed the side pieces on. It was super easy, super quick, and super functional! Let’s be honest, these shelves will probably be a landing space for more clutter, but at least they look cute, am I right? I also added this darling corkboard because, for some reason, kids love pinning artwork to the walls, and my boys are no exception. However, I painted the frame before I hung it, so it matched the vibe a little better.

Wallpaper

I needed to paint the room, but I had this vision of wallpaper on the walls. It was a bit of a splurge, but it was so worth it—and so cute!! This version was pre-pasted wallpaper, which I have never used before. Installing it was definitely a learning curve since I am used to peel-and-stick. However, I finally got it finished, and I am happy with how it turned out!

Hanging Chair

This hanging chair is so fun! It’s easy to install right into the ceiling joists, so it is stable and not going anywhere. And of course, it was a huge hit with all the kids!

Window Trim & Shades

I’ve been slowly updating the trim on all the windows in my home, so I updated the trim here to match. I also decided to forgo curtains and instead installed a blackout shade.

Finishing Touches

Finally, I added all the cute decor and finishing touches, like a new light, artwork, and reading chairs! In the end, I absolutely LOVE how my boys’ room turned out, and I cannot wait to see them grow in this space that I poured my heart into.
