A Fairy Garden Straight Out of a Storybook
Nora and Sadie love all things fairytales, so I knew this DIY fairy garden would be a hit! And I had a blast making it, too. One of my favorite things about this project is that there’s no “right” way to make a fairy garden. You can customize it to fit your space, your budget, and whatever supplies you already have on hand! This isn’t so much a step-by-step tutorial as it is a collection of ideas and inspiration to help you create your own adorable fairy garden. Here we go!

DIY Your Supplies
Fairy garden elements may be tiny, but the price can add up fast! You can supplement your garden with items you already own or can gather outside. Tiny twigs can double as fencing, and painted pebbles are perfect for a “stream” or pathway. You can even paint unfinished wood birdhouses to turn them into little fairy homes.
Get Creative with Fairy Garden Containers
I filled a couple of raised planters with dirt for our fairy gardens, but almost any container can work! Buckets, planter pots, or shallow baskets lined with plastic or cardboard can make the perfect base.
Add Greenery
I used a mix of faux and real greenery, and I love the variety of textures. The type of container you use will determine what plants make the most sense. Moss, trailing flowers, and anything tiny are all great options.
Incorporate All Things Mini
I had way too much fun finding all the miniature accessories for this project! Tiny mushrooms, benches, and bridges brought everything to life. Check out this list for all of my picks!
Add Lighting
One of the comments on my reel suggested adding twinkle lights, and I absolutely love that idea. Tiny lights make everything feel extra magical! I’d recommend battery-operated twinkle lights so you don’t have to worry about extension cords, but solar lights would also work really well outdoors.
Vary Heights and Layers
Stacking rocks, overturned pots, or different plants can add dimension and make the garden feel more whimsical!
Theme It Around Your Child’s Interests
One of the easiest ways to make a fairy garden feel extra special is to tailor it to the things your child already loves. Woodland, beachy, princess-inspired, or cottagecore fairy gardens can all turn out so cute!
Personalize It
Let your kids help paint signs, choose accessories, or come up with stories about the fairies who “live” there. The charm of fairy gardens is that they feel whimsical and get even better over time. The mismatched details can be what makes them feel the most special, especially if the gardens are filled with things that are important to your child!
